Eruption of Nyamulagira Volcano

Mount Nyamulagira, the smaller of the two volcanoes near Goma, erupted at 9:30 pm on November 27. The eruption occured at two points on the flanks of the volcano, and not from the summit crater itself.

Although the volcano is in the Virunga park and the surrounding area uninhabited, the larger of the two lava flows may reach the Goma-Sake road, about 30 kms from the point of eruption. Observation from the ground within the park shows that the lava flow has covered roughly 10 kms of the 30 kms distance towards the road.
