Reaching Morelia

IMG_7730

Though we left San Miguel early in the day, the connections to Morelia prove time-consuming and we don’t get there until late afternoon. Nevertheless, check in at the hotel is smooth and what’s more, it is just in front of the cathedral with the main square as lively as it gets.

We take a stroll through the Mercado de Dulces where we sample the best sweets Morelia has to offer, before taking a pause in the main plaza.

In front of the cathedral, crowds have assembled, some in front of clowns' show, others looking at the small stage where a competition of wrestling for kids has just started. The vendors are everywhere: balloons, gadgets, sweets and whatnots to entertain passersby.

At night, there is a light show with a narration of the history of the cathedral. A lot of people has gathered in front of the façade, taking pictures, while some put on costumes from ancient times. It is Saturday night and the crowd then disperses into restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The atmosphere is very lively, but we get away from the crowds and go for dinner. On the way back, the hotel is vibrating with the music of the nightclub on top with DJ and all. We take a look and decide to come tomorrow. In the room, the music is still loud and it proves hard to sleep until around 2am.

Tips:

All direct trips from San Miguel to Morelia depart around 8am. Other non-direct routes involve a stop at Celaya and from there to Morelia. All in all, without layover times, the trips take four and half hours.

Dinner at Pablo’s, Bartolome de las casas st.: we went there for the amazing reviews and came back disappointed. A lot of the dishes that seemed delicious on the menu were not available and what we ordered, pizza and pasta was just ok.

Hotel Los Juaninos’s location is just great. The room and the common areas in the hotel are grandiose and have old world charm with creature comforts and the bed and pillows are great.
