The morning is busy: withdrawing money, buying plane tickets to Zacatecas and run to the bus departure place bound for Monte Alban. This site, where 30,000 Zapotecs lived, was deserted suddenly around the year 1000 AD. Although the site is huge, it is said that only 10% has been uncovered so far. We walk around in the big green fields surrounded by the greatness of the pyramids from all sides. The view from top is incredible, but I find it hard to imagine where the people lived in this city. The carvings and murals are still very... [Lire la suite]

Iglesia Santo Domingo, Oaxaca It’s 8:25 a.m. and we’re already in the bus to Oaxaca. The great chaos of this morning’s departure is memorable: random filling of our luggage, checking out and taxi to the bus station before we find out that our watches are 5 minutes earlier than Mexican time on a Monday morning traffic jam. We get there just on time for the bus. On both sides of the road: deserted but very green valleys and mountains come and disappear behind us. Vegetation is unlike anything we’ve seen so far. Wild long... [Lire la suite]

View of Cholula and the Popocatepetl volcano On Sundays the streets of Cholula, a small city 20 minutes from Puebla, get filled with stalls selling all sorts of things. It’s early in the morning and vendors are still arriving with loads of things in baskets and bags. We decide to start with a steep climb to Nuestra Senora de los Remedios. Jeremie handles the stroller all the way up. The views on the plain and Cholula city are magnificent especially with the Popocatepetl volcano in the background. The church is said to sit... The jet lag past us (or so we’d like to think), we head to the Zocalo for a nice hot chocolate beside the square and the cathedral. We start by visiting the cathedral but there’s a service and we can’t really enjoy while the people at mass seem to hear Noemie’s voice more than the priest’s. We decide to come back later. Iglesia Santo Domingo not far from the Zocalo is a gem; especially the Capilla del Rosario with its elaborate gold ornaments. The dome has intricate designs on the outside, in brick red mixed with white and... [Lire la suite]

Although we didn’t get all the sleep we wanted on the plane, we arrive ready to face the crowds at Mexico City airport. In fact, nothing as such, Mexico city aeropuerto turns out to be well organized and passing through immigration and the rest is a breeze. The plan is to head straight to Puebla, 2 hours south east of Mexico City. We land at 6pm local time and manage to catch the 7pm bus (having collected our two pieces of luggage and even with Noemie’s stroller slowing us down). So far so good. I don’t recall seeing buses so... [Lire la suite]

All good things come to an end… Today we fly home. We spent a wonderful time. The country is truly amazing… It’s Labour week-end, an important holiday in New Zealand, so there aren’t a lot of people on the road. At the airport, we rush in the duty free to spend our NZ$ till the last cent, teddy bears for Noemie, jade and mother of pearl necklaces, and of course the original All blacks Adidas t-shirt for Jeremie… Enough souvenirs, the best of them we’ve shared with you.
