From Bogota to Armenia

Zapote

.

We leave Bogota early as planned. As soon as the city gets behind us, the scenery changes from the Andes ahead of us to deep valleys and serpentine roads. Slightly after Bogota, we pass through sunny countryside towns where Bogotians come to enjoy a hot day next to a pool, such as country clubs or week-end houses in Melgar.  When we reached la 'Linea', the scenery becomes fantastic. Exotic trees, lush vegetation and green valleys. The road is filled with big large trucks taking all sorts of merchandise from the Pacific port in Buenaventura to nearly all big cities in the area, from Medellin to Cali, and Bogota. This part of the trip was a bit less enjoyable as it was dark already and we were working on the best way to take over the next truck. (we may have passed hundreds)

We stop on the way in a small town, enjoy some strange fruit called Zapote, that is also a substitute for the word 'orange' in Colombia as it is very... orange! We arrive around 8 pm to Armenia where we sleep in a nice little hacienda and meet the unique Umberto... (private joke).

Tip of the Day

We stayed at Hacienda Las Palmas, $50,000 per person, nothing to write home about, but it’s ok, familial ambiance, swimming pool, good breakfast. www.ecohotellaspalmas.com, email: reservas@ecohotellaspalmas.com; Tel: (6) 747 9284, Cel: 300 6100427.

The trip from Bogota took 8 hours, the last part of the road (from the Linea to Armenia) taking lots of time.

We had the pleasure of visiting Cartagena and its lovely monuments. This is such historic city. We stayed at Casa El Carretero www.casaelcarretero.com . A nice Boutique Hotel in the old city. The city is best to be visited in December although we went in March. It was very hot and hummed, but definitely worth visiting.<br /> What we liked the most was walking through the old city and watching the people talk on the streets. It was like going back in time.
