Bikers in the mud

This is a very familiar scene in Congo: Men carrying a big burden on their bikes, travelling for hours, often days, sometimes weeks, to transport goods from one place to another. Not only roads are in a bad condition, but there's a scarcity of cars. Those men's job is thus to move goods (anything will do, from agricultural goods to radios and clothes) from one place to another. Once it's sold, they buy some new stuff that they will sell in their original place. Some make hefty profits, some almost don't earn a thing.... [Lire la suite]

Stuck in the mud - part 2

So we leave the truck behind. We've lost 3 hours. The driver (who has suddenly become the most popular person in the car, despite his heavy mud fragrance) decides to take a side road. He's indeed concerned we shall experience this again, as this is the main "road" for trucks. Okay, let's take this side road then. The "road" is bad, but passable. We do not encounter any other truck. That was good decision. After a while, we get back to the main road, and it gets better. The ambiance is great, everybody feels... [Lire la suite]

Stuck in the mud

After several days in Fataki, time to go back to Bunia. We're in the middle of the rainy season and the roads are deteriorating rapidly. We decide to leave early. It used to take us 5 hours to get there. Who knows how long it will take this time... We leave Fataki at 8:30 am. On board are two handicapped women who can't walk. They went all the way from Bunia to Mahagi. With a motorbike! They attended a "world conference on handicapped people". I guess only people from Ituri attended this "world" conference.... Wash your hands!

Here I am again in Ituri. This time, evaluating a "watsan" project. Yes, here we go today for some humanitarian jargon. 'Watsan' stands for Water and Sanitation. It usually means a project that aims to improve public health. This is done through increased access to water and sanitation facilities. Though Congo does not lack rain, access to quality water remains a problem. Sanitation is also very poor. This leads to lots of waterborne diseases. Cholera is endemic in many places of Congo and diarrhea widespread among... [Lire la suite]

School, Ituri style

This is a school. In Jiba - Ituri - to be perfectly accurate. The school, like all other buildings in this small city, was completely destroyed. It has not stopped functionning though. Children still attend their classes. There are about 120 children who keep on going to this shool. They are receiving no assistance from the government, nor from foreign organisations, and one may wonder when this school will be able to function normally again. We're in the middle of the "small rainy season" (petite... [Lire la suite]

Jeremie is too small!!

You happen to see on this blog some of our best shots. And you may wonder... what's behind the scene? What's going on with the guy with the camera? Okay, let me give you some insight. Jeremie takes most photos (I told you already he shoots everything, everytime, everywhere). But he's too small.... -  well, don't tell him, he will not believe this, especially after his trip with the pygmees... Here's an example. We're wandering around in Congo, and luckily Mister Will is around, takes him over his shoulders for 10... [Lire la suite]
