Hair style

Everybody knows a nice hair cut is essential for women. It's even more true in Africa, and in Congo in particular. One can find here an amazing diversity of hair styles. This is one I encountered during one of my trip to Ituri.

The Tipping Point

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make Big Difference, by Malcolm Gladwell Malcolm Gladwell writes a study of human behaviour patterns. The premise of this facile piece of pop sociology has built-in appeal: little changes can have big effects; when small numbers of people start behaving differently, that behaviour can ripple outward until a critical mass or "tipping point" is reached, changing the world. Gladwell's thesis that ideas, products, messages and behaviours "spread just like viruses do"... [Lire la suite]

Meeting under the tree - Rencontre sous l'arbre

I take the opportunity to be in Komanda to visit some areas where people have recently returned. I stop by a village and start chattering with women. I explain who I am and why I am around. They tell me about their life and their daily efforts to make ends meet. They don't have much, and though they appreciate the assistance received so far, they say it's far from enough and ask for more. Those visits should be handled properly and not taken lightly. On the one hand, those people are genuinely having tough times. They lost almost... [Lire la suite]

Rambo in Congo - Rambo au Congo

One thing we like in Congo: one can't be bored. There always something to surprise you (but also to shock you). You'll see here what you'll hardly somewhere else. As you have read in pevious posting, military are now the main cause of insecurity in DRC. They steal, kill, rape, burn houses, in total impunity. Here's a military we've encountered in Ituri. He seems to be guarding this bridge, over the river Ituri. He sees I have a camera and happily want to show he's a strong guy. So he takes the pause, playing the rambo. For five,... [Lire la suite]

A pilot project - Un projet pilote

Today I am monitoring a food security project in Komanda area. Since the security situation has improved in this part of Ituri, people start returning home. But often, there's no home. Either it's been burned, destroyed, or being occupied by others. Resuming one's life in such circumstances is not easy. Assistance is provided by NGOs to facilite reinsertion and help people resuming their lives. Health is provided for free, schools are being rebuilt, agricultural tools and seeds handed over for people to cultivate. What I am... [Lire la suite]

A termite feast - Un régal de termites

Whilst driving from Bunia to Komanda in Ituri, I see a lot of people by the side of the road. They all seem to be digging, looking for things. I've already travelled that road but that's the first time I see people so busy. So I stop and start inquiring. Hey! I am such an idiot... That's the termite season! At this time of the year, termite abound. It's like.... mushromm season! So if you fancy termites, take the first plane to Ituri and come and enjoy this highly nutritous meal. Some fancy it that much that they do some... [Lire la suite]

Nutrition centre- Dans un centre nutritionnel

Malnutrition is an acute problem in Ituri. Especially in the territory of Djugu, where most fighting between militia took place. Insecurity indeed is one of the main cause of malnutrition. Militia (and now military too) rob all people's crops, or burn their properties, force them to flee, prevent them from cultivating their land. Malnutrition is also caused by lack of education - women don't provide food that is varied enough and with too little proteine. (cassava, the stapple food, is very poor proteine-wise). Poverty is also a... [Lire la suite]

Feed the Hungry - Tétons en coeur !

Jeremie was in Ituri last week. We'll tell ou more about this trip in the coming days. This photo was taken in a nutrition centre in a remote rural area. Women queue to get the rations for their malnourished child. In the meantime, babies get their share.
