Trip to Rwanda

Rwanda. What one usually associates with this country is either the genocide (that took place 12 years ago) or the famous gorillas. We're not going to talk of any of these here. Those interested knowing more on the 1994 massacres definitely should watch the movie "Sometimes in April", an accurate and uncompromising account of the genocide. Concerning gorillas, I guess we'll soon see them in Congo and shall tell you more about this later.

Rwanda is a tiny country, one of the smallest in Africa - 26,000 sq km - at the gate of massive Congo. With one of world's highest fertility rate the population - now above 8.5 milions habitants - is increasing fast. Rwanda is a poor rural country with about 90% of the population engaged in (mainly subsistence) agriculture. It is the most densely populated country in Africa and is landlocked with few natural resources and minimal industry. Primary foreign exchange earners are coffee and tea. The 1994 genocide decimated Rwanda's fragile economic base, severely impoverished the population, particularly women, and eroded the country's ability to attract private and external investment. However, Rwanda has made substantial progress in stabilizing and rehabilitating its economy to pre-1994 levels, although poverty levels are higher now.

We're heading to the Akagera National park, at the eastern end of Rwanda. It is Jeannette's first visit to Africa, and we want to give her the opportunity to do a safari and observe wild animals. We take the beautiful road from Gisenyi to Kigali. We drive slowly as Rita's car is not feeling well. Everytime we drive above 60km/h, the car starts shaking heavily. That's alright, we'll enjoy the scenery then! On the way, we see all the activity around the road. Some are busy cleaning the sides of the road, others go to markets, children play football, and some people just sit and talk, enjoying the day. Once in Kigali, it's a two hours drive to reach the southern entrance of the parK. We'll tell you tomorrow about our first encounters: giraffes, zebras and hippos.

Rwanda. Ce pays offre tout de suite deux images contradictoires. On ne peux pas ne pas penser au génocide, qui a eu lieu il y a déjà 12 ans. Le Rwanda, c'est aussi le seul pays au monde où l'on trouve les gorilles des montagnes. On ne va parler ici ni de l'un, ni de l'autre. Si vous voulez en savoir plus sur les massacres de 1994, outre la très nombreuse littérature sur le sujet, nous vous conseillons fortement le film "Somewhere in April", un film sans compromission sur le génocide. Pour ce qui est des gorilles, nous irons prochainement les voir au Congo, on vous en dira donc plus une autre fois.

Le Rwanda est un petit pays, l'un des plus petits d'Afrique, avec seulement 26.000 km2, aux portes du géant Congo. Avec une fertilité parmi les plus élevées au monde, la population (dépassant mainenant les 8,5 millions d'habitants) augmente de manière exponentielle. Ce pays, le plus densément peuplé d'Afrique, voit le partage de ses ressources naturelles une source potentielle de conflits.

Nous nous dirigeons vers le parc national de l'Akagera, à l'extrême Est du pays. C'est la première visite de Jeannette en Afrique et nous voulons lui donner la chance de faire un safari et d'observer des animaux sauvages. Nous prenons la superbe route de Gisenyi à Kigali. La voiture de Rita fait des siennes. Dès que nous dépassons les 60 kms heures, elle se met à trembler de toute sa carcasse. Pas grave, on profitera du paysage ! Tout un spectacle le long de la route, avec une multitude d'activités : certains vont au marché, des enfants jouent au foot, des vieux discutent tranquillement, d'autres sont occupés à arranger les abords de la route pour ne pas qu'elle se dégrade. Une fois arrivés à Kigali, la capitale, il ne nous reste que deux heures pour arriver à l'entrée sud du parc.
