Congo as we love it - Le Congo comme on l'aime

I can't refrain but starting again our posting on Congo with this great photo. I just love the haircut! Je ne peux m'empêcher de recommencer nos messages sur le Congo par cette photo. J'aime tout simplement trop cette coupe de cheveux !

Here we are back to Africa. Nice to be home again. Okay, Goma is not the liveliest city on earth but it feels good being here. The Lake Kivu is still a wonder with its range of colours. Chimps are still in good shape, and the rainy season comes to an end. And we got loads of project. So many countries to visit and something "special" in mind. Nous voici de retour en Afrique. Ca fait du bien de rentrer chez soi.C'est vrai que Goma est une petite ville, mais ca fait du bien d'être ici. Le lac Kivu est toujours... [Lire la suite]

Falling Leaves

Falling Leave by Ameline Yen Mah Set against a backdrop of changing political times and the collision of the East and West, Falling Leaves describes the true and complicated story of Adeline Yen Mah's survival of an abusive childhood at the hands of her father and stepmother. The Chinese aphorism "falling leaves return to their roots" captures the essence of the psychological journey Adeline Yen Mah undertook when she decided to confront, and recount, her life story. Adeline's years of mental and physical... [Lire la suite]

One of the nice thing about visiting China is that you are exposed everyday to a bombardment of assaults on the English language known as "Chinglish". Chinglish is a term used to describe poor or 'broken' English employed by native Chinese speakers. So let's finish this travelogue on China with those great signs. That's for fun, Chinese shall take no offense. indeed! I guess we should play cards instead... that's right self explanatory mmh all is said ... [Lire la suite]

Guangzhou - DAY 19 - Canton

A major discovery took place in 1983 in Canton. As some excavation were undertaken in the heart of the city to build yet another skyscraper, a cave was found. It turned out to be a tomb. This tomb was the one of the Emperor Wen, the second ruler of the Southern Yue Kingdom, dating back 100BC. The Southern Yue Kingdom was the name of the area around Guangzhou during the Han Dinasty. Inside the tomb, archeologists found 5 funeraries bodies - four concubines, four cooks and seven eunuchs who were all sacrificied to be... [Lire la suite]

Bamboo rafting in Yulong River - DAY 17 - Ballade en radeau de bambou sur la rivière Yulong

The scenery along the Yulong river is as stunning as along the Li river. Bamboo rafting seems a nice way to descend this river, so we give it a try. Imagine a dozen pieces of bamboo, 5 metres long, sticked together, with on top of this - some kind of throne... - two chairs made of (you guessed it...) bamboo!! That is our mean of transportation of the day. We start from the... [Lire la suite]

Yangshuo - DAY 15

Fifteen years ago, a little girl saw a postcard with a fantastic scenery. A green river surrounded by surealistic moutains. This picture stunned her and she wondered where that place could be. She heard the name but could not remember it. But she did not forget the sight and promised herself she would go there one day. This place is the river Li, flowing between Guilin and Yangshuo. When we decided to go to China, Rita recognised the place and we are today fulfilling one of her child fantasies. I should add here that we are... [Lire la suite]
